With the cooler temperatures rolling in, it will soon be time to switch our systems from air conditioning to heating. But, sometimes your central heating isn’t enough and you need to enlist the help of other sources of heat! Although space heaters can be very helpful to keep your home warm, they can also be a little more dangerous than your central heating. So, here is an outline of basic steps to keep your space heater safe, while keeping your warm:
- Make sure the heater you purchased has a label showing that it is listed by a recognized testing lab.
- Purchase a space heater that is the proper size for the room it will be used in.
- Always make sure that you read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels properly, before use.
- Never leave your space heater plugged in when not in use or when you’re not in the room. Do not leave the space heater unattended, especially if children or pets live in the home.
- Inspect the space heater for any signs of damage. If you find any, do not use the space heater.
- Do not use your space heater for something other than its intended use, such as cooking, drying clothing, etc.
- Make sure that you have both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home that are working properly.
- Place space heaters at least 3 feet away from any objects and on flat surfaces.
