Spring Tips for Your HVAC System

March 20th marked the first day of Spring, which means it’s time for Spring Cleaning! Although it’s not a fun process, as a homeowner, it is very important to check your home to make sure that various systems are running properly. One of the most important “Spring Cleaning” items you can check off your list, is to ensure that your HVAC system is running smoothly. No one likes to be hot, so the last thing you want is a faulty air conditioning this summer!

When you’re checking that your HVAC is working properly, there are several things that you need to look for. First, you should go outdoors and clear two feet around any air conditioning or heating units. This will keep any outside debris from affecting the performance of your system. Next, you should wash off the exterior condenser unit with a hose to remove and debris or dirt from the fin area. You can also use a mild soap and water solution to wipe off any grime that is hard to remove. After cleaning the unit yourself, you should have a professional come out to inspect and service the unit, if needed.

After checking outdoors, you should then make sure you have changed your air filters indoors. Often, homes will have various filters throughout the house, so it’s important to know where they are all located. You can choose from several different filters at the store, ranging from basic dust removal to superior removal of bacteria, viruses, pollens, allergens and even odors. This process should be done every 90 days, at the very least, but it’s best to do it once a month. Dirty air filters make the system work harder and end up costing you more money. Once you’ve changed the filter, it’s also best to have a professional come to your home and check the ductwork. They can help you clean out the duct system and remove any debris, dust or odors.
